While your kitchen might have been the hippest on the block when it was first installed, it’s fluorescent lighting is no longer having the same impact. Instead the response it creates is probably all too reminiscent of standing inline inside a fast food restaurant, or worse of the ambience in a store dressing room. Neither is a good thing, and one can actually seem traumatic depending on how extreme it is.

If you are still living with the trendy fluorescent lighting in your kitchen from the seventies get rid of it. Once you do, I guarantee you will see things in a much better light…pun intended for once. And what are you going to put up in its place, aside from energy efficient bulbs in new fixtures? Spend a few extra bucks on dimmer switches. Those controls are no longer limited to use in the other rooms of a house, the kitchen can really benefit from it too. Plus, it is another environmentally friendly options you should embrace now that you have the chance.

House envy is becoming rampant amongst homeowners, especially as we turn to home entertainment as a cheaper alternative to in the recession. If you feel you need to up the ante in order to stay in the competition – fear not. A little change can go a long way – especially when it comes to your home – by adding a few additions, you’ll be greeting a queue of nosy neighbours in no time. Here are a few ideas to inspire you into becoming the source of envy amongst friends.

Chandeliers

Chandeliers are the perfect way to make a dramatic statement without overwhelming anyone. They’re reasonably priced, yet can add a great deal of sparkle to any room. A crystal chandelier will look extravagant and soon attract the attention of your friends. Alternatively, a black chandelier can add a dramatic touch to a room to give a gothic feel.

Rugs

Rugs are a great way to go if you want a small change to go a long way. The bolder the better – and introducing it into a room couldn’t be easier.

Air purifiers

For a modest touch – air purifiers are the perfect addition to your home to impress your guests. They remove contaminants from the air – such as dust and smoke particles – to leave your home feeling fresh and clean. And if you have friends that are allergic to your pets, they won’t have an excuse anymore to not come and visit.

Modern sinks

Bathrooms are an easy room to concentrate on in order to make a little change to go a long way. A freestanding glass basin, paired with modern taps, is a simple way to give your bathroom a modern breath of fresh air.

Wall mounted electric fires

You want your guests to feel relaxed and feel at home, and what better to go about that than a fire? To mix modern with traditional, a wall mounted electric fire is the perfect option. Picture the scene: you and your guests sat around the fire, mugs of hot chocolate in hand, talking about how lovely your home is.

Sofa made out of a vintage bath

For a real talking point, why not think outside the box? They’re rare to find but do exist – a free standing vintage bath with one side cut off and turned into a sofa. They may be quite cosy in size – but who else can say they own one?

Upholstered bar stools make up the majority of bar stools on the market, and it is easy to see the reasons for their popularity. There are a large number of ABS resin stools on the market, with ergonomic seats injection moulded from a durable, impact resistant polymer, as well as acrylic resin . These are formed from translucent Perspex that creates a striking futuristic look, bathing a room in colour if light is shone through, and even Bauhaus inspired metal stools. These styles are sleek and chic, with minimalist lines that makes them superb in many locations, but even with their attractive designs, upholstered stools always prove the more desirable.

Faux leather accounts for the largest range of bar stools on the market, with soft upholstery that gives a luxuriant touch. Faux leather is available in a mind boggling array of colours, from minimalist black and white to traditional brown and cream all the way through to striking primary colours like red and yellow and even funky orange. Aside from these resplendent colours, there a various styles that utilise contrasting two-tone faux leather for added visual impact and may even have an ABS shell to frame the seat.

Real leather is the other form of upholstery and provides an opulent, upmarket feel like no other. With an unmistakeable aroma and tactile feel, genuine leather is a natural material that adds a high class feel to any kitchen or breakfast bar. Hard wearing and resilient to stains, leather ticks all the boxes and reinforces the feel of quality these stools exude, perfect for the discerning individual.

Both leather and faux leather are used to cover the padded cushion and backrest sections of stools, beneath which you can find cosseting high density foam padding. The thickness of the foam depends on the model of stool; some items have a thin layer that keeps the overall look slender and elegant, whilst others have several pliant inches that support your body in comfort for even extended periods of use. The foam is accentuated in some designs by stitch detailing that gives the surface a quilted or segmented look, adding further visual impact.

The dense foam is what makes these upholstered stools sought after, and means they are ideal for all occupants, from the young to the old. These stools are either built on wooden or steel frames, in a variety of styles to suit. Wooden frames are usually found as four legged designs that provide superb rigidity and stability on all floors, whilst steel frames come in one of two finishes.

Chrome plating is a scratch resistant, polished mirror finish whilst brushed stainless steel stools are worked by hand into a subtle striated surface, ideal in contemporary settings. Whether a gas lift bar stool, which comes with an integrated variable height and 360 degree rotating hydraulic mechanism, or a fixed frame stool, all come with integrated floor guards that help keep scuffs and scrapes at bay, perfect from wood to tile flooring.

We are not quite done with our warm weather festivities, and as such there is still time to make an impression when entertaining out of doors. This can be done with as little effort as displaying an interesting, or unusual beverage dispenser. It only takes one thing to make your soiree stand out, and if it is something simple, all the better. And if it does not involve you slaving over a hot stove in the kitchen, or shelling out bundles of moola on grand collections of lanterns, or new furniture then it truly rocks.

There are heaps of tantalising dispensers ranging from elegant hammered glass and metal-footed ones, to fifties style robin’s egg blue bell shaped ones. Whether you are looking for something rustic, antique, odd, or inventive, you can find it in more than one form to be sure. But, by doing your search now you are likely to get a real bargain, since shops are pulling out all the cold weather items to promote. Plus, they can become the feature of your table, and the anchor to an entire party theme should you want it to.

If you have never owned a home before, or at least never one with a garden then you are excused from knowing the ins and outs of the importance of having sheds to store all that comes with keeping a respectable garden. No one will necessarily expect you to know that you will need a place to stash articles like fertilizer, watering cans, extra trellis pieces, shovels, plastic pots, ant spray, gloves, and a whole host of other critical stuff.

And, if you were not raised in a house that had a garden, or one with a garden that your parents tended then you will be even further behind the learning curve when it comes to not only providing accommodation for those supplies, but also which supplies you will even require. The funny part is that while it is perfectly understandable that such an individual would no have knowledge, those are the very people who think they should some how have gained such knowledge. It is a belief that these are things that should either be self evident, or that would have seeped into their minds in some unidentifiable way.

For those who have no experience with gardening, relax because you are in good company. Then after you have accepted that it is alright to be starting from scratch, by all means get an education. You might ask how one goes about such a thing, and there are many ways to do so. Just be ready to learn, and accepting that it will take some time.

You could go with the shot gun approach and enlist the aid of online materials, magazines, books, landscapers, garden supply representatives, neighbours and anybody or any other source that crosses your path. Or you could take the exact opposite approach and decide that you will live and learn your way through this process. I must admit that I do not recommend the later, because what usually happens is that you find that you do about half the gathering of info via sources, and the other half through your own successes and defeats.

So once you realise that all those tools you bought really need to be kept outside of the house because they are filthy and take up a lot of valuable space turn to someone who works with sheds for sale. And after you find that your hedges are either under watered or over watered, but you just can’t figure out which ask that Mrs. Woolinsky across the way who has the grandest garden on the block to take a quick look. Chances are that you will strike a balance, and get there in the end. Do remember this though, once you have it pretty much figured out, that new neighbour who looks absolutely clueless when it comes to gardening deserves your impromptu assistance too.

Though homeowners with a fireplace are often considered lucky, the term changes when the fireplace becomes defunct, and unused. That is when it becomes a test of one’s decorating skills to either conceal the gaping hole and its mantelpiece, or in the alternative to dress it up in a trendsetting way. Either broach it as the bane of your existence, or the very thing that makes you a legendary decorator. I personally have been involved in half a dozen of these makeover projects and know firsthand how magnificent, or how pathetic the outcome can be. The latest redo I tackled involved placing a mirror inside the fireplace itself. By placing it flush with the back of the opening walls a wonderful reflection of the patterned rug filled the vacant spot nicely. Get creative here, but do not do a half hearted job, because this is one of the places that a quick budget Diy project shows its flaws.

If you are doing home improvements, or renovations there is something that you might want to consider doing with any salvageable items. Think about reusing them in your garden area, because they could come to life again in the out of doors setting. What you thought would have to be trashed, or given away because you just do not have the space to store could prove to be a great structural addition to your outdoor living space.

The things you can really get a big charge to the garden from are old windows, ceiling beams, or any discarded wood. You can use them to create definition, and outdoor rooms, or perhaps benches or tables. Or if you are not feeling compelled to convert the items into new things of use, then prop them against a wall, or hang them and allow vines and plants to use them as a trellis.

Such forethought can ultimately turn out to be your favourite feature of the garden. But it will be an additional thrill to know that it cost you absolutely nothing.

Bean bag furniture made a valiant comeback into the mainstream furniture foray a couple of years back. While some of the products were relatively uninspired, there were those that were entirely different than anything that had been made available to the general public before. The best of the bunch were made of high end materials, and maintained their shape nearly as well as a traditional chair or couch would. Those improvements were well received, and as such the latest collections from those designers are making headway too. There really is something inviting about the modern bean filled furniture that is not only the contemporary feel, but the twinge of nostalgia I think. No matter what the exact feature is that makes them appealing, they appear to be here to stay.

When the economy goes south, homeowners look to make improvements to their dwellings. The flooring industry is aware of this trend and is responding to the increasing demand for floors that give value for your money. In order to give the consumers what they seek, floor manufacturers are focusing on low maintenance materials, and low cost.

This means that vinyl and carpeting are the big sellers at this point in time. Specifically, in the vinyl category are the luxury level products. These are the ones that are made to replicate the appearance of stone, wood and ceramic. They are being replicated so well that it is becoming more and more difficult to spot the real from the vinyl. In addition, considering they can cost a fraction of the price of the real things, this area of the market is in high demand.

Well, to be completely honest I had not given a shadow box a second glance since grade school. You remember those silly projects where you had to arrange items based upon a theme and do a presentation regarding their importance. Ever since completing my assignment back then by organizing a coin collection I have put those glass cases out of my mind.

That is until I recently saw that it is in style to put your jewellery on display. You know, to make it a feature, decorative art. What I love about this idea is that it is the absolute best way I have ever seen to keep those cocktail rings, pendants and even necklaces within view. Although, I must recommend that you get a shadow box that has some real depth to it, to ensure that the pieces you have hung inside do not get jarred by the opening and closing of the glass front.
